The Fair Tipping Organization (FTO) is committed to advocating for a tipping culture where tipping is optional, rather than an expectation or obligation. Our mission is to promote fair wages for service industry workers and ensure customers are not burdened by tipping pressures. We believe in creating a system that treats all parties—employees, employers, and customers—fairly, while ensuring transparency and respect in the service industry.
Core Principles
Fair Wages for Workers We advocate for a service industry where workers are paid fair, livable wages directly by their employers, reducing dependence on tips. Employers should take responsibility for paying their staff well, ensuring they can afford a decent living without relying on variable or unpredictable income from tips.
Tipping as a Choice, Not an Obligation Tipping should be optional. We aim to change the current culture in which tipping is seen as mandatory. Customers should feel free to tip if they experience exceptional service, but not feel pressured by societal norms, service staff, or the business itself. The absence of a tip should never lead to poor treatment of customers.
Transparency in Pricing Businesses should provide clear, transparent pricing that reflects the true cost of services and products, without relying on tips to offset lower wage payments. This way, customers know exactly what they are paying for, and workers know what they will earn for their labor.
Quality Service Regardless of Tipping High-quality service should be the standard, regardless of whether or not a tip is given. Service workers should not be dependent on tips as an incentive to provide good service, and customers should not feel obligated to tip in exchange for fair treatment.
Employer Accountability Employers in the service industry must be held accountable for paying their workers fair wages and providing necessary benefits such as health care, sick leave, and job security. The responsibility for workers' livelihood should not fall on the customer.
Cultural Shift in Tipping Norms Changing societal expectations around tipping will require time and effort. We are dedicated to creating awareness around this issue and working with stakeholders—such as labor groups, employers, customers, and policymakers—to shift the tipping norm from mandatory to optional.
